I heard about Emerge through a club I’m a part of at my school called “Young Leaders in Health Care.” I waited for months for the day to come. It was a day filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences and learning opportunities. If you are interested in any aspect involving the health care profession this day program would be really beneficial.
Personally, my end goal is to be a neonatal nurse practitioner. Even though that career path does not entail medical school, the program was still an amazing opportunity. I met great people I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet and made connections I won’t ever forget.
It takes a lot of work to put something this professional into play and all the people involved are super dedicated and enthusiastic about making this the best experience possible. All the activities are hands-on and it’s a super cool sneak peak into the future. It’s also a great time to figure out if its the right career path for you. You also get time to talk to and listen to doctors, nurses, and surgeons throughout the day and are able to ask them questions–which I found extremely helpful. Overall it was an amazingly organized, professional experience that I think anyone with an interest in healthcare should experience.
I am a sophomore at UCSD and I attended the emERge conference on June 29, 2018. I heard about Emerge through Dr. Zack Shinar. I met Zack and Wendy Shinar at a medical conference in Boston in 2017. I reconnected with them when I moved to San Diego for school and Dr. Shinar told me about emERge! From there, I connected with Wendy, who is by far the best, passionate, and most organized program director I have ever worked with. She told me all about the program and after speaking to her for ten minutes, I signed up!
The website is a great way to know what you’ll be doing during the conference, and after reading about all of the hands-on experience that I would be getting, I was so excited to go! The conference is all day, from around 7:45am to 5pm, and let me tell you, I had so much fun I didn’t want it to end. During the conference, you hear lectures from some of the best physicians in the country and after the lectures, you get to practice skills that you just learned about.
The hands-on exercises were so real, fun, and applicable to life in the medical field. After the conference, I walked away with the biggest smile on my face. I had practiced so many skills! I think the best part of emERge was the fact that, even though I’ve known I have wanted to be a doctor since I was in middle school, it inspired me even more to become a doctor. I didn’t think I could be more inspired than I already was.
I recommend Emerge to anyone thinking of being in the medical field for any career. Students wanting to be doctors, nurses, nurse practitioner, physician assistants, etc, can all benefit from this conference. You will learn things you cannot learn from a textbook. It’s perfect for high school students, and especially beneficial and applicable for college students because the information you are receiving is relevant to your education. It helped me to guide what classes I’ll take this semester and how to study for the MCAT.
I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Emerge. I think it’ll change the medical field someday by continuing to bring more and more people into the medical field. I hope to come back when I’m a doctor and work at Emerge so I can inspire students like the way the staff inspired me!!
